Abstract:
We establish a canonical bijective correspondence between a
``metric'' fractal induced by an IFS-like specification and a
``coalgebraic'' fractal induced by a combinatorial specification. This
is a representation of the former by the latter: the latter consists
of (equivalence classes of) infinite streams hence is of symbolic
nature. Gluing of shapes calls for careful mathematical treatment: for
coalgebraic fractals we employ the presheaf framework by Leinster; for
metric fractals we introduce the notion of injective IFS as means of
specifying metric fractals. Our leading example is the unit interval
[0,1] and its representation by binary streams.

This is a joint work with Bart Jacobs (Nijmegen) and Milad Niqui (CWI,
Amsterdam).
