Title:
Language Grid: Service Oriented Architecture for Language Resource Interoperability

Abstract:
To increase the accessibility and usability of online language services, this talk
explains the Language Grid, which facilitates the creation of composite language
services for various intercultural collaboration activities. The Language Grid is an
initiative to build an infrastructure that allows end users to create new language
services for their intercultural / multilingual efforts. To this end, language resources
(including data and programs) are wrapped as web services so that users can easily
combine these services to create workflows that suit their own activities. Thus, the
Language Grid can be seen as collective intelligence based on language services. The
Language Grid can connect standard languages worldwide, or combine the language services
generated by communities.

There are four types of stakeholders in the Language Grid: Language Resource Provider,
Computation Resource Provider, Language Service User, and Language Grid Operator (who
coordinates the other stakeholders).
Though there can be various operation models for the Language Grid, we propose a
non-profit operation model in this talk. This model limits the usage of language
services solely to non-profit operations, tries to match the incentives of stakeholders,
and manages various issues associated with intellectual property rights, user privacy,
and operation costs.

Fundamental software for the Language Grid has been developed at NICT from April 2006.
Non-profit Language Grid has been operated by Department of Social Informatics, Kyoto
University from December 2007.
Various types of application activities are ongoing at the Language Grid Association, a
user group of the Language Grid: NPOs and universities collaboratively support
intercultural collaboration in hospitals, schools, and so on. This talk provides
scenarios for several domains by using the Language Grid as a collective intelligence
platform.

Title:
Towards a Framework for Supporting Adaptation Patterns in Service-Oriented Computing

Abstract:
The vision of Service-Oriented Computing aims at a flexible and agile service
composition by combining business process execution with models and methods for
automated service selection. This talk presents the whole picture of our research
activities towards the vision, as well as further introduction to a few of the involved
studies. Our activities consist of two aspects. One aspect is to enrich the models and
methods for automated service selection, where our activities put focus on relationships
of multiple service providers and quality parameters that do not appear in Service-Level
Agreements. The other aspect is to incorporate such selection models and methods, with
different assumptions into business process execution.
