ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems (TECS) SPECIAL ISSUE on
            Embedded Systems for Real-time Multimedia


Today, the design process for high-end multimedia embedded systems has
become a crucial bottleneck due to the increasing complexity of both
the software and the underlying hardware, coupled with shortened time-
to-market pressures. While there has been a notable growth in the use
and applications of multimedia systems and in the evolution of system-
on-chip design technology, there are still enormous opportunities for
improving design productivity in this domain. Given this backdrop, the
aim of this special issue is to report on different research
achievements addressing the challenges (e.g., in terms of software,
architectures, real-time systems, DSP, compilers, multimedia
applications) that are faced during the design of hardware and
software for multimedia embedded systems

Topics of interest include:
        ~U Specification and modeling of multimedia systems
        ~U Multimedia systems design methodologies and case studies
        ~U Circuits and architectures for embedded multimedia
architectures
        ~U Multimedia processors and reconfigurable architectures
        ~U Emerging trends (Systems-on-Chip, Networks-on-Chip, Game
applications, etc.)
        ~U Validation and verification
        ~U Software optimization and compiler techniques
        ~U Timing aspects of media streams
        ~U Scheduling of media processing
        ~U Resource and QoS management methods
        ~U Temporal estimation and protection of media streams
        ~U Real-time kernels, OS and middleware support

A selected number of top papers from IEEE ESTIMedia 2008 are invited
by the guest editors for review. Authors of these papers are asked to
extend their work for a TECS journal publication, which is then
subjected to a rigorous review process. Besides submissions from
ESTIMedia~R08 any other high quality submissions that fits the topics
of the special issue are welcome. Authors should submit their journal
version at Manuscript Central adhering to the formatting instructions
on the TECS Web page (http://acmtecs.acm.org/) and indicate that you
are submitting to the Special Issue on Embedded Systems for Real-time
Multimedia (on the first page and in the field "Author's Cover
Letter:" in manuscriptcentral).
