Prof. Akihito Taya

Title: Federated Learning: Privacy-preserving distributed machine learning in IoT

Abstract: Federated learning (FL) has attracted much interests as a distributed machine learning. Because of its features of high communication efficiency and privacy protection, many extensions have been proposed for various applications. This talk explains the basics of FL and its diverse extensions. Recent works of fully decentralized FL for IoT devices will also be presented.

Biography:
Akihito Taya has been an assistant professor of the Aoyama Gakuin University. He received the B.E. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan in 2011, and the master and Ph.D. degree in Informatics from Kyoto University in 2013 and 2019, respectively. He joined Hitachi, Ltd. from 2013 to 2017, where he participated in the development of high-performance computing clusters. His current research interests include distributed machine learning over sensor networks.

Prof. Yutaka Matsubara

Title: Toward Safe and Secure Embedded Devices: Research Trends and User-Centric Life Cycle Management

Abstract:
The recent embedded systems play an important role in IoT(Internet of Things) services and are connected to the Internet via smartphone, wifi, or 4G/5G network. Toward safe and secure embedded devices, the life-cycle management of them become mandatory and be improved.
In this presentation, I talk about fundamental knowledge for embedded system security including risk management, development process, and after-market operation like software update. Then I also introduce research trends and our recent activities such as fuzzing technique and blockchain-based device management which supports users and device developers easily to update software.

Biography:
Yutaka Matsubara is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Informatics, Nagoya University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Information Science from Nagoya University in 2011. He is also a committee member for many academy-industry collaborative activities like TOPPERS project and DEOS project. His research interests include real-time embedded systems and system dependability (safety, security, and resilience). He is a member of IEEE, ACM, IPSJ, IEICE, and JSAE.
