Talk title:
Beyond Miniaturization: 3D-Stacked LSI Systems for Emerging Robot and IoT Applications

Abstract

Recent advances in 3D integration technologies have opened new opportunities for semiconductor systems beyond conventional miniaturization. By vertically integrating heterogeneous components such as processors, memories, sensors, communication circuits, and power management circuits, 3D-stacked LSI systems have the potential to enable new functionalities and applications that are difficult to achieve with conventional planar integration.

In this talk, we introduce our ongoing research project on system-level design technologies for 3D-stacked LSIs, building on our experience in embedded systems, hardware-software co-design, and FPGA-based system development. Our research aims to establish design methodologies that address the architectural, functional, and physical challenges of heterogeneous 3D integration.

We also discuss emerging applications in robotics and healthcare. In healthcare, ultra-compact IoT devices could enable continuous physiological monitoring with minimal impact on daily life. In robotics, highly integrated, compact controllers could support distributed control architectures and more flexible robotic systems.

Through these examples, we explore how 3D-stacked LSI technologies can go beyond miniaturization to create new opportunities for intelligent Robot and IoT systems, leading to innovative products and services.

Biography

Takeshi Ohkawa is a Professor in the Research and Education Institute for Semiconductors and Informatics at Kumamoto University, Japan. He received his doctorate from Tohoku University in 2003. He joined Kumamoto University full-time in April 2023 and became a professor in May 2025. His research interests include three-dimensional stacked LSI design, FPGA technology, and hardware–software co-design for low-power robotic and vision applications.

APRIS English Communication (Interactive) Workshop

Facilitated by Associate Professor Lisa Nabei
School of Information and Telecommunication Engineering
Language Education Center, Tokai University

Format: A 60-minute interactive workshop for Japanese and Thai students.

About the Session

This participatory session is designed around student-to-student communication rather than a lecture. Participants will practise concise, natural English through one-minute self-introductions, short explanations of their research, checks for understanding, and group sharing. Students will help one another simplify expressions and communicate their ideas clearly to listeners from different backgrounds.

Facilitator

Lisa Nabei is an Associate Professor of English at Tokai University. Her teaching and research focus on second language acquisition, English for Specific Purposes, English phonetics, workplace communication, speaking assessment, and intercultural learning through global project-based activities. She teaches courses including English for Technology and Global Business English and received the Tokai University Teaching Award in 2021.
